Week in Review #35 November 17th-23rd
Recapping leading week. Pictured my friend who helped me throughout.
I do try my best to write some sort of long essay about the poker world in this space, but flu season has begun and I have spent much of this week in bed. So if you want my thoughts about a topic du jour in poker, you will have to wait for this space next week. In the meantime, here is some positive feedback I’ve recently gotten for POTD
“Love this post, Sam. As far as I can see this quality of content just doesn’t exist anywhere else.”
“you’re really killing it with these POTD.”
A Discord member (and a reminder the Discord is free for all to join here) suggested that I change the URL of POTD to make them more searchable. So starting last week and continuing into the future all POTD urls will be puntoftheday.com/p/POTD-XXX where XXX is the number. At some point in the future I will change all the old urls, but I also want to make sure that links to older POTD are not dead, so I need to go through all the posts and all the links and it turned out to be a more tedious project than I imagined. So it might take longer than you think. And a reminder if you have any feedback, positive, negative or neutral my ears are open and there is a good chance I will make the change happen. As always you can subscribe here, click the button below.
Additional Sims For Premium Subscribers
Premium subscribers get the raw files of sims I used to write my POTDs, sims that are more accurate and appropriate than equivalent sims in the big public libraries, videos of me walking through the sims, and a text summary of how I ran the sims. This week I uploaded:
Two HRC and PIO sims that looked at different BvB PF sizings for POTD #171
Three PIO sims that looked at different turn leading strategies for POTD #172
Three PIO sims that looked at different flop combinations for POTD #173
An IOU: I analyzed a premium subscriber’s hand from the NAPT for POTD #174
A PIO ICM sim for POTD #175
Additional Analysis for Premium Subscribers
Everyday Premium Subscribers get an extra bit of analysis not included on Substack. Today I’ll share #onemorething from POTD #171, where I wrote about how to adjust to the 1k/2.5k blind level
POTD #171 onemorething
Today’s hand is an interesting hand if it took place at 1.25k/2k blinds, but I decided to dive into the odd 1k/2.5k level for the premium subscribers. A reasonable question one might ask is, how much does this matter? I think when unusual game conditions occur naturally, it is a good way to exercise your problem solving brain. Here there is an obvious conclusion about how the SB should play: they are getting worse pot odds, so they play tighter. There is also a less obvious conclusion, they are getting worse pot odds and they play more aggressively and shove more.
A question from the BB’s perspective is, okay what do I do if my opponent plays 1k/2.5k the exact same as they’d play 1.25k/2.5k. Your response should probably look about the same in both scenarios and you can pay your phone bill with all the extra money you’ll earn from the SB limping T4o when they should just open fold it. In this hand, I don’t know if Kiat was adjusting his SB range because he’s studied the 1k/2.5k level or making an intuitive adjustment that is directionally correct like “I should fold my 0EV VPIPs” or if he’s not adjusting at all. The good news is the BB’s strategy remains pretty similar either way. The BB shoves a little more often at 1k/2.5k, but the overall level of aggression is pretty consistent. Whether it’s 1k/2.5k or 1.25k/2.5k or 1k/1.5k you will never know someone’s exact SB first-in strategy, but assuming they are making slight adjustments and countering with slight adjustments yourself is still the best course of action without specific reads.

I launched part 1 of a series I am running on Run It Once called “10 WSOP Main Event Lessons”. In the series I zoomed out and talked about 10 common leaks I found watching the WSOP Main Event, while looking for the Punt of the WSOP ME. If you are someone who plays a lot of big field live MTTs, this series will be well worth your time.
