In POTD #57, I wrote about a hand in the SCOOP Main Event where Fabiano Kowalski misplayed quads by overbetting them on the river, which prevented his opponent from raising in a spot where he has 6x pot to play on the river. The SCOOP has come and gone and the WCOOP just wrapped up; I wrote a blog titled “How to Play Quads” and ran several sims going over the hand in question. So one would think that I would have learned to play quads by now, but alas, that is not how learning or poker works. Playing quads in a heads-up pot vs. an opponent who can have straights, flushes, and full houses is very different from playing quads with 220% pot to play on a board where your opponent’s range is capped around top pair.
I am still in the midst of recording my Run It Once1 series where I review my online poker session from September 23rd, 2025, and I have already written about the largest pot I played in that session, but I am still searching for the worst hand I played during that session. As of October 9th, 2025, I believe that today’s hand is the worst hand I played in that session. I had gotten four of five decisions wrong and several of them cost a large amount of EV, but before I officially anoint this hand the Punt of September 23rd, I want to do a little more due diligence. I am sure this hand is a bigger punt than POTD #138, and I believe today’s hand will be one of the top two punts of this session. So once I finish recording this series for Run It Once, I will publish another POTD entry from that session to see if today’s hand: How to Not Play Quads will be the winner or have to settle for being the runner up. Onto the hand.
