Poptimism is in and being an indie snob is out. At the turn of the millennium, the safest type of (normally) guy to make fun of was the hipster. Everyone made jokes about craft beers, mustache wax, flannel shirts, and Arcade Fire. Stuff White People Like mocked and categorized the tastes of hipsters, and we all had good fun. The most annoying, clichéd hipster thing one could say about a popular artist is “I knew about them before they were big.” Well, there are viral poker plays that wax and wane in popularity; sometimes this has to do with the metagame of the moment, but recently, there are plays that go viral because poker influencers love to talk about them. They are usually branded as a sort of “one cool trick” play that focuses on an unconventional play in a hand that is otherwise quite conventional. One of those plays is making an overbet shove as the preflop aggressor on JTx flops; today, I’m going to put on my hipster hat and say, ya it’s a pretty cool play in 2025, but I remember learning about it in 2019 and misapplying it in 2020.
Gareth James, POTD subscriber Jonathan Little, and at least one friend of mine making something that has yet to be released, have all made content about these big shoves. The secret is out. Get ready to shove 350% pot and blow everyone’s mind! In POTD #49, I wrote about a hand where Seth Davies didn’t get enough money in the pot with KK in a three way squeezed pot. In today’s post we are going to look at a hand where I also had KK in a multiway squeezed pot, but in typical POTD fashion, I put too much money in the pot and misapplied a cool play instead of playing good poker. It was a sloppy, lazy play that cost me a decent amount of money. Let’s read on.
