I am back from Jeju, but still have a backlog of posts to catch up on. My plan is to get all the posts finished ASAP and once I catchup to the backlog I will resume the normal MWF, Saturday Week in Review, Sunday Special schedule.
After having a very rough trip thus far, I was still excited for the Main Event. I have had a very strong track record in Triton NLH Main Events. I final tabled Main Events in Madrid (9th), Cyprus (2nd), Montenegro (5th), London (5th), Jeju twice (5th and 4th), cashed in Vietnam, and cashed twice more in Monte Carlo. There is something about the deeper starting stack and longer levels that seems to suit my game very well. So I thought this would be the perfect tournament for me to turn things around, especially as it’s also one of the higher-stakes tournaments and one of the larger fields, so a good result could turn a disaster trip into a very good one in just three days. I busted my first bullet hero-calling Artur Martirosian in a standardish spot that you can read about in #onemorehand if you become a Premium Subscriber. It was not how I wanted the day to start, but I licked my wounds and got ready for bullet two.
Bullet two started off well. I doubled up when I made two pair in a three-bet pot and then chipped up by winning some more small to medium pots. Then I lost a preflop flip that would have gotten me to three starting stacks with AQ vs. TT and was down to one starting stack. I battled for a bit and kept my head above water before losing a three-bet pot vs. Patrik Antonius where I had KK and he had As9s on 662 with two spades. I was left with 20k chips and staring down the possibility of firing a third bullet, but the poker gods took mercy on me and let me win a bunch of small all-ins, including flopping a straight flush vs. Ben Tollerene. I not only saved that third $100k but bagged my first stack of the trip. Paying for two starting stacks and bagging 40% starting stack is not what I had in mind, but it is progress of sorts. We will see what I can do with that stack tomorrow.
Today’s hand occurs after I hero called Artur. It’s from my second bullet, but it came well before my roller-coaster spin up, spin down, semi-spin up that took up the back half of my day. It’s a hand that I think looks okay at first blush, but didn’t feel great as I was playing it, and afterwards I can say some clear mistakes were made. It’s a hand where I made a bunch of small mistakes that compounded to a relatively large mistake at the end of the hand.
