In reviewing my play from yesterday’s tournament, I was a little disappointed. I felt my ranges weren’t all that well calibrated: I pure bet in spots where my hand is a 50/50 mix, I bet half pot with a hand that almost always bets quarter pot. I won’t give every example, but there were a lot of plays like that. They weren’t necessarily even errors, but overall it felt more that I got lucky to not blunder than that I played so sharply that blundering was an impossibility. So it also tracks that today was the day where I had my first hand that I think I pretty clearly misplayed. I don’t think my play was all that costly, but it was wrong, and after three days of very clean poker, I was not at my best yesterday.
Of course, it’s also possible that yesterday I just got dealt hands that were hard to play, and my ability to execute was more or less the same as it had been the previous three days, but the degree of difficulty was harder. That’s one of the hardest things about poker: Luck dictates your results, but it also dictates how well you play, your self-perception of your own game, and others’ perceptions of you. It’s so hard to untangle the signal from the noise. Sometimes it takes months or years to determine something as simple as “Am I even good at this stupid game?” Alas, we’ve all chosen to play this stupid game. You’ve also chosen to read about it, and I’ve chosen to write about it hours after I paid $25k to play eight hours of acceptable poker. My goal for today is to play better than acceptable poker; let’s hope I can do it.
