The feeling of being hero-called is always a humbling one. If a great player calls you down, you feel like they know you better than you know yourself. If a bad player calls you down, you can’t believe you made an amateurish mistake like bluffing off your stack to a calling station. At the table, I usually keep it together, a tip of the cap and a “nice call”, but inside I’m often furious. I can’t believe that idiot called me down with nothing.

When a bad player calls me down, I tend to chalk it up to my own mistake. I should have known better. When a good player calls me down, there are usually two options: They knew I was overbluffing and adjusted correctly, or they didn’t understand the spot and got lucky to catch me bluffing. In my post-hand rage, I tend to think it’s the latter, but after the fact once I’ve calmed down, I consider that maybe I am bluffing too much.

In today’s hand and Wednesday’s hand we will look at two plays from opposite perspectives. In today’s hand, I can’t believe my opponent made such a loose flop peel. Wednesday’s hand takes place months later, but I make the exact sort of loose flop peel that I can’t believe my opponent made.
