POTD #293 I Peel a Pretty Hand and See and Ugly Flop
But one that's good for my range.
Recently, I wrote that one of the benefits of looking at every hand you play is that you’ll be able to spot leaks in all your automatic plays. A frequent occurrence for me is that I am specifically looking to see if I successfully implemented an odd play, when I notice the play before the odd play was the error. “Do I get to lead the turn after check-calling the flop?” feels like a more pressing question than “Was my flop check-call any good in the first place?”, but when looking at any odd play you might make, it’s important to understand the preflop, flop and turn ranges that led you to the point where you might want to make an unusual river play.
There are two benefits to this type of study. The first is that you’ll understand the odd play you’re looking into with much more clarity if you understand how you got to the spot. The second is that it’s an excuse to study bread and butter spots that are common but often neglected. It’s always nice to play a hand that reminds you that they key to playing a three way three bet pot might not be determining if you can bluff JJ on AKQ, but remembering you need to shove JJ preflop. The question of “should you double-checkraise your flush draw?” is not going to make you nearly as much money in the long run as learning boring preflop play, like that sometimes you just need to fold JT suited. In today’s hand, I found an unusual flop lead that I was rather proud of myself for finding, but when I first looked up an approximation of this hand, I saw that the best way to play my hand was one I never considered, shoving preflop. A humbling experience to think you’ve found a clever play, only to miss a less sophisticated, but higher EV play staring right at you.
