Something I’ve been writing about quite a bit recently is that knowing something about your overall strategy, and being able to calibrate that knowledge and execute it as part of a balanced strategy, are very different things. Let’s say that you know that you can four-bet jam 60bbs after a three-bet, which might seem trivial, but there was a time in my poker life where someone making such a large jam would have marked them as a fish. This is a useful piece of information to have, but knowing when to do it, how often to do it, and what the ideal hands to do it with are, requires some calibration. If you raise the button and the SB three-bets, you rarely four-bet jam A5s; your hand is too good. If you raise UTG and UTG+1 three-bets, you rarely four-bet jam A5s; your hand is too bad. If you raise the HJ and the CO three-bets you, now you get to jam A5s. Knowing your can four bet jam A5s for 60bbs sometimes is not worth that much without the proper calibration.

Today’s hand occurred at a point in my poker journey where I had started some more intensive and structured studying of multi-way pots, and there were certain heuristics I had begun to internalize. One of those was that if you raised preflop, got called by a player IP and the BB, and the flop action was check-check-bet-call, the preflop raiser often played raise or fold when the action was back on them. That was something I knew, but it’s not true on every board. Even when it is true, I still need to determine the correct raise size and figure out if my hand is an appropriate hand to raise, and knowing I play “raise or fold” does not help me determine my hand strength, just what options are available to me. In today’s hand, I miscalibrated my hand strength in a spot that I thought was close, but where my hand was just not good enough.

I am in the LJ with K♦️9♦️ (576k) and make it 23k, Ali Imsirovic (695k) calls next to act, it folds to Danny Tang (410k) who calls in the BB.

Flop (84k) Q♣️J♥️2♠️: Danny checks, I check, Ali bets 21k, Danny calls, I make it 95k, they both fold.
