One of the benefits of training with a solver is that you can experiment without the risk of looking stupid or losing money. It’s fun to see odd plays and pick apart the logic of why they’re chosen— re-jamming 30bbs from the BB vs. a BU raise with K7o in an actual poker hand is not as fun as seeing that a chart does it. When you are playing poker, you are trying to balance playing great, which vs. other top players often means finding the correct solver play, with knowing when to revert to a safe play when you are unsure what to do. There is often an asymmetry at play: If you aren’t sure if K7o is a rejam, but you know it mixes calls, calling can make sense because making a huge jam with K7o might be lighting money on fire. So naturally, you deviate to the safe play when playing for real money.

If you always have that attitude, then you will deviate to the safe, familiar, comfortable play too often, and will be easier to play against and sacrifice EV in the process. However, sometimes what happens is, you will consider the easy play, and you will think, this strategy can’t possibly be this simple and easy to execute. You will think of something you studied months ago that vaguely resembles the hand you are playing. Perhaps you’ll remember something you saw on stream or in a training video or read about on POTD. You will reach for a complex play that only the best players can find, then you will learn that this hand is actually rather simple and the way you’d play it in 2012 would have been perfect. Today is one of those hands. I reached for an odd play, one I literally may have never made before in my decades playing poker, only to learn that I probably would have found the right way to play this hand if I had played it in the Sunday Mulligan on Full Tilt Poker. Poker can be humbling, and sometimes the standard, normal, run-of-the-mill play is the easy one, and today I reached for something well beyond that.
