POTD #251 Montenegro Monday: Linus Loves Raising the River
Wrecked Week begins. Can I figure out what to do?
On Tuesday of next week, Punt of the Day turns one year old, and I’m closing out the first year with a bang. For the final week of Punt of the Day’s first year, I am having another theme week, which I am calling Wrecked Week. Oftentimes I write about punts that are my gift to others: Look at me playing this hand terribly and look at my opponent’s bank account getting filled with cash. This week, I will be giving my opponent something slightly less valuable than my money, my accolades. I am going to be looking at hands where my opponents outplayed me in spectacular fashion, and I will come to a conclusion: Did I get “wrecked,” or was this just a normal poker hand that happens sometimes when you play versus great players?
It was the type of bluff that had people in the YouTube chat saying things like “nice moove=)” or “Linus GOAT.” One guy even said “Nice hair greenroom” before correcting himself to “Greenwood.” At least he corrected my name after insulting me.
Linus built a reputation around putting people in difficult spots in deep-stack poker; he is known for his relentless aggression and taking his opponents down odd lines with lots of small leading, raising and reraising, but he’s also always ready to play for stacks. At the time, I’d barely played with Linus; I knew him by reputation but did not know that much about the specifics of his game. In short order, he had me rubbing my hands through my aforementioned “nice hair” as I contemplated calling a big river raise.

It folds to me (183k) on the button with J♦️8♦️ and I raise to 3k, it folds to Linus Loeliger (185k) who calls in the BB.
Flop (7.5k) 9♦️3♦️9♠️: Linus checks, I check
Turn (7.5k) 2♥️: Linus bets 2k, I call
River (11.5k) 8♥️: Linus bets 2.5k, I make it 11k, Linus makes it 48k, I fold.
