POTD #102 A Super Tuesday for A Super Tuesday Hand

A classic question long time poker players are asked, up there with “But how much did you lose?”, is “What’s the biggest pot you’ve ever won or lost?” As a tournament player, that’s a tricky question. I lost AK to AJ AIPF before the money in the Triton Million for around four starting stacks, which I suppose was technically around a £4,000,000 pot. But for a variety of reasons— swapping/selling/deal brokering to get an invite— I did not have close to 100% of myself in that tournament. Other hands, like say POTD #95, I bluffed off ~400k in equity, but then I ended up winning the tournament anyways. And while I bluffed off ~400k in equity, my opponent did not gain $400k in equity, so I don’t think calling it an 800k pot is correct.

When it comes to live cash games, the biggest pots I ever lost and played sticker-price wise were a variety of hands I played in a 1 billion KRW (~1M USD) game in Jeju. That game was so big that if you three-bet, c-bet, and gave up, you’d lose six figures. When it comes to online cash games, the biggest pots I played took place on GG during COVID and were usually in $500/$1000 ante NL with occasional straddles. I looked through some of my old HHs in those games for potential POTD fodder, and most of the hands were pretty standard, but I do remember the biggest post I lost.

I had around 200k in my GG account and sat down with $100k at two tables playing $500/$1000/$2000. I was not that familiar with straddle no-limit, but I got a crash course in how to play from the straddle, and while I was not technically super sharp, I had figured out enough that I figured I was winning in the game because there was a big spot in it. I doubled up on one table to $200k and was whittled down to ~$50k on the other table. I thought to myself, “You should stand up at the table where you have $200k, so you will have more money on your account and, on average, play more hands,” but for whatever reason I decided against it. Then Wiktor “Limitless” Malinowski raised first in from the SB, the BB flatted, I squeezed TT from the straddle and Limitless shoved for $200k. “Surely he wouldn’t make a big shove like that with KK or AA,” I thought, and I snap called TT. He had KK, turned down my request to run it twice, and busted me. Seat open.

Limitless has played so much high-stakes cash that he probably does not remember that hand, but I do. Today’s hand is another hand I played vs. Limitless; this is one I’d be shocked if he remembered because until digging for POTD hands, I didn’t remember playing it. This pot was much smaller than our TT vs/ KK, but at least I played TT correctly, something I can’t say about the T7s I had today.
